*7/13/9pm update: Hike is being cancelled due to extreme heat forcast for 7/14. *

A challenging hike for those interested in a serious day outdoors! Meet behind Walgreens in Oakland at 7:30am. Carpool together to the trailhead. We should return back to Walgreens around 6:00pm. Walgreens address: 409 Ramapo Valley Rd, Oakland, NJ 07436. Park/meet behind the Walgreens.

We will drive approx 1.5 hrs to Minnewaska State Park Preserve. The hike will start around 9:00am, and we will  return to the trailhead by 4:00pm (back to Walgreens around 6:00-7:00pm). In the 6 hours that we will be hiking around the preserve, we will cover about 8 miles of mostly rocky trails. Wear hiking boots, bring both snacks and lunch, and apprx 2 liters of water. We will stop for a long lunch break with great views.

Description from AllTrails

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/gertrudes-nose-trail?u=i&sh=sebmgd

"Explore this 6.7-mile loop trail near Kerhonkson, New York. Generally considered a moderately challenging route....Gertrude’s Nose Trail travels through dense wooded areas to beautiful views while trekking along various cliff edges and rock formations, starting from Millbrook Mountain all the way to Patterson's Pellet with the main highlight being Gertrude's Nose."

It is recommended that visitors get there earlier as this is a very popular trail. Make sure to bring lots of water and get ready for some rock scrambling! This route has the potential to get wet and muddy, with lots of little creek crossings so wear appropriate footwear.

Dogs are allowed however dogs are not recommended for this trail due to its rocky paths and scrambles.

Come join us!

Reviewers on the Alltrails website say that it is closer to 8 miles than the listed 6.7 miles, but about 2 miles of it are on a flat "carriage road".

RAIN DATE: Saturday 7/13 (if by Friday mid-day, Sunday's weather looks bleak, we can do it instead on Saturday. We will email all RSVPs on Friday IF this change is being made)

Note: Bring lots of water, and a packed lunch. Beautiful views! Dogs okay.
